Donald P. Willard

Literary Paranormal and Mainstream short stories, plus a little bit of humour, too

Donald Willard is a husband, father (paternal, not clerical), teacher, counselor, business owner, and freelance writer. Like Earnest Hemingway, he has crisscrossed the globe, experiencing life to its fullest. Unlike Earnest Hemingway, he has done this entirely in his own mind - but hey, that doesn’t make him a bad writer, you know.

Mr. Willard writes fiction that spans various genres. He also writes humor, pithy essays, and occasionally SEO articles on very boring topics that, if nothing else, help him post bond as needed. His fiction has often been compared favorably with Stephen King’s, and his humorous essays with those of Dave Barry. However, these comparisons have been made solely by himself.

Quoth he: “A writer writes because he is a writer. It is not what he does, but what he is. If he writes merely for the paycheck, he can become just as unhappy and just as unfulfilled as any Joe Lunchbucket punching a clock for his wages. That said, writers also eat. And that paycheck is awful nice when it’s time to fill the refrigerator with juice boxes and string cheese.”

Donald P. Willard’s short stories

Exposed by Donald P. Willard

Chris has an unusual fear — but all fears are real unusual or not — and he#8217;s about to face his final test, one that will prove he’s overcome it. Question is, is he proving it to himself, or someone far less tangible? (Paranormal Adventure)

Editor’s Note: A wonderfully evocative tale of courage and strength here from Don Willard, a favourite The Deepening author. I loved this the first time I read it, and I love it just as much now. I hope you enjoy this piece as much. —womblin

First Day of School by Donald P. Willard

Absolutely live, real, too true, and a delight…even while groaning.

Humour / Slice of Life short story

EDITOR: zentao

Killing the Grass in Little Brown Circles by Donald P. Willard

Summertime and the grass is dying, but only in little, round circles. Just be careful where you step and what you hear. (paranormal)

Play Time by Donald P. Willard (Vol 1, #3)

A boy left behind by life returns again to the home he knew, venturing forth to play both within the memories and with brand new friends who dare to call him normal.

Editor’s Note: Don has outdone himself with this short story that will bring readers to that glorious sense of eerie plausibility and knowing. (paranormal)

Treasures by Donald P. Willard (Vol 1, #5)

Mama likes to collect things. Sometimes Mama ‘finds’ or ‘borrows’ what she sees as just the right thing, but from the wrong person. Can Jack, her son, talk his way out of the trouble his Mama’s bought home? (Horror)

Editor’s Note: Treasures had me smiling and frightened all at once. Don has this way of conveying written dialogue so thoroughly, that I truly was transported to another place, not ‘coming round’ until I’d read the final words. Indeed, great words they are. —womblin
