Literary / Humour short stories
John Severt lives with his wife of 29 years in Columbia, Maryland with an insane beagle named Roxy. He has three grown children and no grandchildren yet (but not for lack of nagging.) He has been a criminal prosecutor then criminal defense attorney for some twenty-nine years. He has also taught for over twenty years as an adjunct faculty member at a national law school. His experience with marriage, dogs, kids, students and the criminal justice system has engendered the need to see the humor and absurdity in all human endeavors. Previous works include “The Miracles of Buford” in a short story anthology published in Great Britain.
John Severt short stories
Miracles of Buford by John Severt
When the Bishop says stop, can Ezra keep his meal ticket? (Humor/Humour)
Editor’s Note: A hilariously irreverent romp through the bowels of West Virginia miracles, John Severt is swiftly becoming one of my favorite humourists. Guffaw at will, and apologies to Catholics. We mean you no harm…but even you’ll admit that it is funny. —zentao
Exposed by John Severt
Pan it, ban it, run it out of town. Money, honey? (Humor / Humour)
Editor’s Note: Poking fun, but with oh such truth. —d.l.keur for editor on holiday
Greenlight by John Severt
A coach, a dead son, a little boy. I won’t say more. You MUST read it. Precious.
Editor’s Note: This is my very favorite of John’s works. This one carries one’s heart away. — zentao
Recycling by John Severt
To tell the truth, the whole truth, I’m just like Dad and don’t care why. Neither does Mommy. (Literary)
Editor’s Note: John steps deftly from the realms of humor into pure literary with this clear and so pertinent perspective of a too real examination of the truth, so help us, God. Brilliantly delivered. —zentao
Shellacked by John Severt
When clogdancing, remember that the weasil always laughs last. (Literary / Humour)
Editor’s Note: Introducing a very prepotent voice in this assymetrically artistic creative spark of genius by John Severt. —zentao
Where Truth Lies by John Severt
An ugly rape, a sexual fantasy — the prosecutor sweats as Stevas digs for truth, but is Justice, indeed, blind? (Maintream)
Editor’s Note: Another mainstream story from author John Severt, this one does itself justice. Now I want a book from this fine writer. —zentao
