Brooks St. John

Experiemental, Fantasy, Science Fiction novels and short stories

author Brooks St. JohnBrooks St. John was born in Fort Worth, Texas into a black Native American family.  First published at the age of five, her writing aspirations were temporarily quenched with her passion for music and art.  But eventually her soul wandered back to its destined path, and in 2003 she began writing screenplays for submission to such fellowships as AMPAS, Sundance Film, and Walt Disney.  After receiving high praise and an honorable mention for the script “Sons of England,” Brooks quit her job as a professional photographer and continued on her path to literary works, science fiction/fantasy, and the pursuit to expound on spiritual myths and beliefs through various genres of writing.

St. John currently resides in the eastern United States where she spends quality time in writing, reading, and music.

Says Brooks:  “I have spent my life pursuing various arts of expression, and nothing has satisfied my hunger for folklore, fantasy, and the pursuit of understanding our reality more than through self-expression in writing.  My mind tends to wander.  My eyes tend to gaze on things that we know little about, but what is readily available for us to discover.

“Writing is an art, a passion…a way of life.  There is simplicity in the way it is expressed, and a quickening in the way it is interpreted.  That is the art of writing.  It takes on a life of its own.  It takes shape and form in ways that an author could never have imagined.

It’s subtle yet harsh.  It’s beautiful, and yet, at times, ugly.  It’s soft and yet piercing.  That is the greatness of the written word.  It is the ultimate provocation — the ultimate deepening into a world previously thought known.”

New Dawn: City to the North by Brooks St. John

There is a city to the north wherein dwell the Dark Clothed Ones holding rainbow eyes….  (Fantasy)

Editor’s Note:  Enigma and portent couple in a unique mystique in this mythic book excerpt written by an extraordinary young woman of vision.  —zentao

New Dawn: Lost Nation by Brooks St. John

The Beginning of the End or The Beginning of a New Beginning?  (Experimental)

Editor’s Note: A novel excerpt, this is untouched by editorial blue pencil because, while this breaks many rules of grammar and fiction and good writing, it holds a certain echo, a certain timbre that the “eye can hear.”  Rendered in what is, simultaneously, an Eastern and a Native tradition of enigma, the story resides “within the seeming,” and it leaves you wondering, wanting more.  —zentao
