Lost World by Adam Elkus
A child forced to live in a virtual world because of his autism; two parents who disagree on treatment…and a hacker who threatens to destroy what little life and interaction parents and child share through the wonder of technology in this near-future world where those with means can give their severely handicapped children love and life and hope. But, if the hacker’s demands are met, will he keep his word, or is it even possible to stop the virus he’s already loosed within the neuro-network? Both parents must decide. (Science Fiction)
EDITOR’S NOTE: This story came across my desk and utterly captured my attention. The author knows exactly how to touch the deepest nerve, then turn around and find a deeper one to make a very salient observation about our collective probable tomorrow. Impressive and very much worth the experience. —zentao
