Spring Drive by Chuck Guilfod, a historical tale about hanged loggersNew historical novel seeks answers in loggers’ deaths

Spring Drive: A North Country Tale by Chuck Guilford offers a fictionalized account of the hanging of two Michigan loggers in 1881

Spring Drive: A North Country Tale is a historical novel that grapples with a complex web of environmental, social and personal issues. Set in a 19th century frontier community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the story features two loggers who come to town to collect their wages and have a little fun. But the pair is soon caught in a swirl of events that leave them facing the hangman’s noose.

“Having grown up in Michigan, I was intrigued by the lingering sense of mystery about exactly who these men were and precisely what happened to them,” Guilford says. “The incident is not widely known or studied, so I wanted to write a novel that would dramatize the event and draw attention to it in a way that is interesting, informative and memorable.”

Based on the historical figures of Frank McDonald and Ian McDougal, the book offers a fictional account of what may have happened on that fateful trip that led to their deaths. As Canadian loggers who worked in the Michigan wilderness, the men were caught up in the tension between longtime residents and the largely foreign-born logging force that was active nearby. The book aims to comment on environmental stewardship, economic justice and other issues that remain relevant to this day.
