Pay Conroy’s new book, South of Broad, is getting mixed reviews from readers. Some readers find it boring; some find it simply lacking. Others find it an excellent, worthwhile read. What’s interesting is that bad reviews are coming from readers who have enjoyed his previous books. Is it because he writes at a slower, more leisurely pace than fiction now travels across the pages in the fourteen years since his last novel and his readership has different expectations? Or has he simply lost his touch in that long vacation he took from between releases?
