Award-winning and beautifully illustrated by Robert Papa, The Scarlet Stockings from Sleeping Bear Press does, in fact, bring the realism and true atmosphere of Revolutionary America as seen through the eyes of a young girl living in Philadelphia to life for children exploring early Americana.
My personal feelings about this book are that, while it lacks real “story”, it is well-written and I truly think it would be a good study book to include in the classroom when children are exploring the Revolutionary War. My review copy has since been passed on to such a classroom, where it sits, face out, on the bookshelf, awaiting interested hands.
