I receive requests from novelists to check out their books for inclusion on The Deepening. I also get sent books to read and review. Unfortunately, many of those books turn out to be badly written, badly edited, even badly conceived. I just checked out one this morning, one I had promised to consider. The writing is deplorable with too much belaboring of setting and atmosphere and a plodding start, never mind complete and too obvious ignorance of reasonably proper punctuation. I couldn’t even make it through chapter one. Yet, how do you tell that to the hopeful author? …Call me feathered. I don’t.
I don’t say anything. I just don’t feature the book. I can’t. Not and stay honest to my principles of what is and is not good reading.
I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m just going to have to continue to search out the books we feature myself, using reviewers I trust, my own reading, and exploring excerpts. It means I’m going to remove our novel referral form. It’s the only way I can keep the quality up on TD, yet avoid hurting well-meaning, earnest, and very hopeful authors, something I’m loathe to do unless they’re authors like Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Dan Brown, or John Grisham whose calloused egos can afford the hit.
Published April 2009.
Do you know who is looking back at you through your computer screen? He or she may not be what they say or seem to be. How do you know. Maybe, just maybe that picture is the one that came in the photo frame when it was purchased.
Do you think he is really educated, drives a Bentley, has money and sales to great places for fun on his very own sales boat.
In my case, he was not any of these things. I had to learn the hard way. Everything from his teeth to his penis, were all enhanced artificially. His inflated ego and all his wild stories just sucked me right in.
This short story is full of everyday examples of life and BS you will hear from what is in todays society quite prevelant, the sociopath. As they tend to blend in to what ever situation, employment or recreational avenue your life will lead them, they are hard to notice. Notice you will however, when the stories don’t add up! Learn and avoid the dangers associated with these men/women.

Of course, if you want to link your preferred shop, that’s fine, too, but you MUST use target=”_blank” in your link, like this:
<a title="your link description" href="http://your-uri.com/" target="_blank">
We strongly suggest that member authors build their author pages on The Deepening, too, where you not only can link in a direct feed from your blog (an example), list your complete works with buy links, add video, audio, and images…in short, promote yourself and your books, all on The Deepening.
If there is enough call for it, we’ll put in a dedicated “shop” where books will be featured in an easy-to-use catalog, so go ahead and sign up, then get your author friends involved, too.
